Probably the most well-known drain in Adelaide is The Adelaide Darkie.
The opening of the drain near the city starts with a buried 1800’s bridge. The sandstone brickwork here is truly historic. Not one but multiple bridges are buried inside. It’s hard to imagine horse-and-cart once took people atop these. The brickwork on the ground has been worn down by years of running water. Shafts of sunlight stream down through grates in the ceiling making the tunnel more visually stunning. It continually changes as you walk through; from late 1800’s brickwork, to modern red brick, corrugated iron and concrete. That’s the best thing about The Adelaide Darkie – its diversity; there’s something different around every corner!

Urban Exploring: Pacific National Freight Car Graveyard
Near the Pacific National Adelaide Freight Terminal in the inner northern suburbs of Adelaide sits a relatively unknown graveyard — a graveyard of discarded freight cars. They sit rusting in the sun, some on such a slant as if near toppling. Unfortunately all the doors have been tech-screwed shut, supposedly to keep hobos from setting up residence inside. Bored one afternoon? Take a look…

Urban Exploring: The Twin 60s
Originally the Twin 60s tunnel was a tributary creek leading into a much larger stream. In 1964, water flowing along this creek was diverted into two large concrete pipes and buried to accommodate the large industrial site that now sits above.
You can take either pipe. Each of its several sections are separated by large junction rooms. 750 meters before the exit of this 3 kilometer long tunnel it opens up into a single, standable segment, of which awesome street art enhances the normally bland concrete walls.
