Urban Exploring: Cheddar Studios

Built in the 1930’s, Cheddar Studios grew to become an internationally renowned cheese maker. Over the years this South Australian company won many awards and gained such a strong reputation overseas that Japan became one of its largest exporters.

The plant sits empty now with only few remnants of its past inside. Two rusty disused boilers sit in the boiler room and three heavily insulated black chiller rooms sit in the centre part of the building. Beneath is a large cheese maturation chamber currently being used for storage.

The wrecking ball isn’t too far way for this once thriving cheese manufacturer — plans are in the works for Cheddar Studios to be re-developed into self-contained apartments.

Urban Exploring: Faith No More

Faith No More, an abandoned victorian gothic church, has sat abandoned and in poor condition since the 1970s. It was built in the mid 1800’s, but since then its castellated decorations have been removed and its central window destroyed leaving the structure in a ruinous state.

The ownership of the property has been in dispute for many years; probably exacerbating its level of deterioration. It now sits quietly in the backstreets; stabilized from falling by pins and steel uprights. Off-limits to the public, we snuck inside Faith No More a few weekends back while on an explore, to discover what was inside:

Urban Exploring: Sleazy College

After two years of exploring decaying architecture in and around Adelaide, Churches by far evoke an eerie conflicted feeling. Sleazy College was no different.

This chapel and hall built in the late 1800s serviced many surrounding buildings over the years; originally it formed part of a boys home, then later becoming an orphanage, a school, a college and finally a hostel.

Outliving its usefulness they now sit in ruin, doubtfully to be restored, more than likely destroyed.
